You can't be diminished

“No one can ever be diminished.” These were the words spoken by a Christian Science practitioner after he listened to my story of witnessing a very disrespectful interaction between two individuals. One of the individuals indicated her total disdain for the ideas presented by the other person. The words of the practitioner about not being “diminished” were to be the basis for many healings in my own life.

As a woman who grew up in the US in the 1960s, I was deeply affected by the injustices that were brought to the forefront of collective consciousness: the treatment of African Americans, the turmoil of the Vietnam War, the treatment of Vietnam veterans, and the treatment of women both in and out of the workplace. Because of my family’s history, I also felt impacted by the events of World War II. All of this created a deep pool of grief—grief that colored my entire outlook on life and even my concept of God.

But this was not to be the end of the story, because somewhere along the line I realized that I needed to let go of all this sorrow. How was I to do that, though? The gloom seemed so overwhelming.
