Gentle silence brings peace

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

My husband and I know a quiet, secret place near our home in England’s Lake District. In the summertime, when many places are so busy with holiday makers and the hustle and bustle of everyday business, we take a picnic and go up there to sit out in the hills listening to the birds, watching the sheep gently grazing, sometimes hearing the little lambs bleating for their mothers and the ewes baaing in response.

Have you ever felt like these little ones, calling out for help in your troubles? When, like the sheep, we call out to our Mother, God, She always answers us. And when we listen for Her voice, we feel the inner peace of Love’s caring touch. We become aware of God’s presence, and we know we are safe.

David must have felt this safety when he wrote the lovely songs that are in the Bible’s book of Psalms. The Psalms are a part of the Bible that I use regularly. Reading “Be still, and know that I am God,” for example, and really feeling it in my heart, immediately has a calming effect because it assures me of God’s presence and action in my life. Instead of fretting, I can be confident that God truly is guiding and protecting me.
