Grace that sweeps away mental darkness

Grace. It sweeps out even the deepest mental fear the way dawn sweeps darkness from a canyon. With its divine favor and blessing, God’s grace transforms the confounding angst of human life into steady spiritual peace. It imparts strength, purpose, dignity, and sanity. And it does this with tender, loving light—the presence of divine Mind, God. Here’s how it showed up for me at a time of deep need.

I wasn’t living through a quarantine, but I sure felt alone and mentally confined for lots of reasons. One, I was battling feelings of depression, and two, I was regularly confronted with the angry, defiant behavior of a family member—a pattern I couldn’t seem to break. One afternoon we disagreed in a most unproductive way, and he again dashed off in a rage.

As I stood alone in the kitchen that day, feeling as though things would never get better, I looked up to see the sun pouring through a window, making patterns on the wall. A breeze stirred the curtains. Something in the stillness—invisible, yet so present—impelled me to turn away from the ugly scene with this individual. It completely halted the drama, opened my heart, and steadied me to feel the gracious presence of divine Mind. Not one angry mind and another frustrated mind, but just one loving, all-powerful, all-good, all-present Mind—God—and God’s inviolable, wholly spiritual idea, man.
