Purity—the cornerstone of spiritual building

One time when I was struggling with an illness, the Christian Science practitioner who was praying with me said: “We live in the atmosphere of Love divine. That atmosphere is pure. And so are you!” I had never done much thinking about purity before. I was soon healed of the ailment, but I wanted to learn more about purity. What I found was arresting.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says, “… the corner-stone of all spiritual building is purity” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 241). She didn’t say that the cornerstone of some spiritual building is purity. She said all spiritual building. The Bible says in Matthew, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (5:8). That certainly sounds foundational to me.

How can any of us grow spiritually without “seeing” or understanding God? We need to “see” and understand God because we are actually His image and likeness. There is no other way to understand ourselves. Comprehending God as pure good and man as His pure reflection must then be the starting point for “building” an authentic life—for experiencing here and now the kingdom of God that Christ Jesus said is within us.
