Pain overcome

How grateful I am for proofs of the power of God’s love for us as shown in a favorite passage of mine from First John 3:1: “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us.”

Some years ago, at the end of the first day of a fishing trip with my husband, my right hand was suddenly in such great pain that it was difficult for me to keep my thought focused. I wondered what had caused this, until I realized that often on the first day I would grasp the rod so tightly that I’d have to stop periodically to relax my hand and avoid cramping. Perhaps I’d forgotten to relax enough this time; and maybe I wouldn’t be able to fish the next day.

But I soon realized that prayer was better than human reasoning to deal with the pain. The thought came to call a Christian Science practitioner to pray with me, but we were in a remote area of Montana where cellphones didn’t work and the landline in the lodge wasn’t very private.
