IN THE NEWS A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE

The Gulf Oil Spill and divine Love's solution

ON April 20 a massive explosion aboard a Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that was being leased by BP, a major oil company, killed eleven people and injured 17. Over the weeks since, millions of gallons of oil from the broken pipeline have created the worst oil spill in US history. Along the Gulf Coast, many people's livelihoods hang in the balance as the flow continues. Fishing, tourism, and wildlife have all been affected by the spill. With hurricane season approaching, fears that a major storm will spread the oil even farther inland are rising.

Investigations have uncovered enough corruption to lead to the reorganization of the US Minerals Management Service, which had too close an association with industry insiders to effectively regulate practices on the rigs, including accident prevention and safety. The US government has also opened a criminal inquiry into the spill.

At this writing, attempts to shut down the well have failed, and the best one can hope for is some containment of the spill, technology that has so far failed at these depths. A permanent solution is expected by August when a relief well to draw off the oil will be completed. With efforts at human contrivances failing or uncertain, along with the long-term impact of the spill, prayer for inspiration from divine intelligence is essential.
