"TODD, WHY AREN'T YOU in the public practice?"

The question caught me completely by surprise.

It was put to me by a friend three years ago. I was telling her about my experiences sharing Christian Science with my business colleagues, as part of living my life more publicly as a Christian Scientist. To me that meant being more willing to offer a spiritual perspective in conversations where friends and colleagues were ruminating over personal challenges relating to health, finances, relationships, and so on. In a gentle and noncoercive way I would simply ask them if they'd like to hear how I might handle a similar situation as a Christian Scientist. More often than not they welcomed the discussion, and it would open the door to a deeper conversation about the type of spiritual healing that I'd been practicing all my life. I was finding that while people are not necessarily comfortable talking about religion per se, there is broad public interest in spirituality—a genuine desire to feel more connected to a spiritual force in their lives.
