SWINE FLU'S RETURN? A SPIRITUAL DEFENSE

David Cornell taught college physics in the American heartland for 40 years, and now lives closer to family in the Pacific Northwest.

GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS in the US and abroad are bracing for what has been projected to be an aggressive return of the swine flu in the fall. US President Barack Obama has warned Americans to prepare for this, and has asked for money to be given to states and hospitals so that they can expand vaccination programs (see The New York Times, July 10, 2009). Recently, American government officials held an Influenza Preparedness Summit at the National Institutes of Health. Speaking to the Summit by telephone from Italy, the President said, "We may end up averting a crisis; that's our fervent hope."

Vaccinations are a source of comfort for many who depend upon them for disease prevention. But new strains must be developed to combat the swine flu virus, and there is evidence that some forms of the disease may be immune to vaccination. Also, the new vaccination material must be judged safe before use.
