The secret of marriage-making

As a newlywed, I thought Lucille was all that a good wife should be. An endearing companion to her husband, children and grandchildren. An amazing cook. A community leader. A homemaker whose house and gardens were worthy of a magazine cover.

So one day I asked her, "Lucille, what's the secret to a happy marriage?" She didn't need to think about it. "Honey," she said, "it takes sheer determination to make a marriage work!"

Well, so much for my romantic notions. A successful marriage was clearly going to demand more from both my husband and me than just learning to cook, allocate the household chores, and somehow cover our expenses. It was going to take work. And yes, "sheer determination."
