'From those who have, to those who need'

Last month, the Great Lakes Regional Representative of the Christian Children's Fund, Scott Phillips, came to Boston to thank The First Church of Christ, Scientist, for the way in which the Church has supported relief efforts to help children affected by the tsunami in South Asia and the hurricanes in the American Gulf states. Phillips presented the Church with a plaque declaring its donors "honored members of the Champions for Children Society."

After the presentation, Phillips told me that Christian Children's Fund (CCF) has been improving the lives of children in many parts of the world for 68 years. "Its mission," he said, "is to encourage respect for children in need, and to create an environment to hope in which they, their families, and their communities—of all racial, religious, and cultural backgrounds—have opportunities to achieve their full potential.

"People's donations provide practical tools for positive change among children who mostly don't have any shoes; get no more than one meal a day, if they're lucky; whose parents walk many kilometers a day to get water; and who, if they can find a school, are jammed 160–plus to a classroom."
