'I just wanted to learn'

My meeting with him was brief. I remember very little of what he said about taking a class in prayer-based healing. He was a Christian Science teacher and healer. But I recall coming away from that appointment with the distinct impression that this class would be one time in my life when I could totally submerge myself in the search for truth. That idea struck a chord deep within me.

When I eventually took that 12-lesson course called Christian Science class instruction, even with that idea of submergence in mind, I somehow thought that my purpose was to gain a body of knowledge. I would learn how to heal through prayer. That did happen. But somewhere along the way I realized that this classroom work, and the following years, was much more about learning how to learn. The truth that I wanted to swim in flows to each of us straight from the divine source, One to one, constantly. Even a gifted teacher does not stand between the learner and the informing Mind.

Everyone has his or her own course of learning and self-discovery, and the individual rights of every seeker are sacred. In this week's feature, "A course in healing," you'll hear from eight people whose interests in this course of study were as diverse as the points on the globe they call home.
