Calculating a new way to think

I honestly don't know which one I dreaded most: sitting at my desk in algebra class, or sitting on the sofa with algebra homework and Dad.

You see, Daddy, holder of numerous patents, and a recognized authority in his field, was innovative. Or contrary. Depends on how you look at it. Engineer that he is, he thrives on solving problems—and formulas mean nothing to the man.

"Who needs formulas?" he'd demand back then, brushing away the list I was supposed to memorize and apply. "Let's use common sense. Forget about the formulas! You can think for yourself!"
