Finding home in the presence of God

AWAY FROM HOME. Without a home. Moving home. Homesick. In search of a happy home. Few people escape the need to give special attention to where they live. Along with proper nourishment and adequate human affection, most everyone would say the place they call "home" is fundamental to happiness and security ... one of the basics.

But these days the security and comfort of home are becoming out of reach for more and more of us. Major American cities have been facing dramatic increases in the number of homeless people they must care for. According to one article in this issue (see p. 10), the number of children who live on the streets worldwide is at least 150 million. And even for people who are fortunate enough to find a place to live, rent and mortgage costs can account for wildly disproportionate percentages of total income. Can anyone afford not to give attention to issues so fundamental and farreaching?

When our staff planned an issue to help to address these worldwide housing concerns, we talked about the underlying fact that God—in whom St. Paul said, "We live, and move, and have our being"—holds answers for all who are looking to find or improve their home. Like the man on our cover, who is walking in the reflected light of the sun, we are all, already, at home in the illuminating presence of God. The articles that follow explain more about this. In one way or another, they all show that whatever a person's housing problem may be, a solution is waiting in our relationship to Him . . . it's one of the basics.
