How I cared for my children's colds and conflicts

Raising children has given me ample opportunities to practice the teachings of Christian Science. Looking back over the years when my daughters were growing up, two incidents in particular stand out.

When my girls were about eight and ten, the older one came down with a heavy cold that caused her to awaken several times during the night, coughing uncontrollably. When this happened, I would rush to her bedside and help her sit up. Besides patting her back until the coughing subsided, and giving her a glass of water to drink, I would also share some spiritual truths with her such as the fact that God loved her and that she was His perfect, spiritual idea. This would calm her, and she would go back to sleep.

A few days passed, and she was not better. At that point, I realized I had something else to deal with as well—the fear that her younger sister would get a cold and both of them would wake up coughing at the same time. It wasn't long before this happened, and I found, like Job in the Bible, "The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me" (Job 3:25).
