A CONFEDERATION OF HUNGER FIGHTERS

Oxford Famine Relief was set up in 1942 to help war-ravaged Europeans facing hunger, even starvation. Today, it has grown into Oxfam International, a confederation of 11 member organizations around the world. Their combined efforts address the structural causes of poverty and related injustice in more than 100 countries.

The member organizations are in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, the United States, and Canada. Each branch of the organization works within a nation's individual culture in order to carry out Oxfam's mission. Several members may join together to help out with relief efforts in a particular place. For instance, the Spanish, British, American, Australian, and Canadian affiliates are all engaged in assisting El Salvador's recovery from the devastating earthquake of January 2001.

Relief efforts are just one part of the work, however. Oxfam America also supports self-help efforts and long-term development needs in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Americas—including the United States.
