The Notion That something as complex as a human being can be distilled into a test tube is of course absurd," wrote James Shreeve in a National Geographic article entitled "Secrets of the Gene" (October 1999). In preparation for the story, Shreeve submitted a sample of his blood to a leading biotechnology company in order to determine his genome, or the constitution of the genetic script he had inherited from his parents. While the procedure is not common today, it is said to foreshadow what's to come.
