Christmas in a foxhole

My most memorable Christmas was in 1944, my first Christmas away from home, which I spent in Germany as a member of an infantry company in the United States Army. We had just been involved in the Battle of the Bulge, where our company had sustained heavy casualties. The weather was bitterly cold.

The prospects for a merry Christmas appeared very dim.
