A light in the window

Windows, of course, let in light. And today especially, at the window of my hotel room in the Alpine city of Aosta, Italy, a burst of reflected sunshine fills the room with morning light like I've never seen before. Light that radiates so powerfully from the towering, snow-covered mountains that everything else—even the brilliant-blue sky itself—looks pale by comparison.

But light can also shine out from windows. Like it did one cold night in Stockholm not long ago.

We were hurrying down a dark street to catch the trolley on time. I wondered how much longer we could stand the frigid winds. But then Ricardo said, "Hey, look! Look up at the windows. There's a light in every one of them! They say it's a tradition here in Stockholm."
