TO OUR READERS

One talk-show host has described this as the "Age of the Victim." And when we counted three page-one articles in a major daily newspaper on victims of various situations, we decided to challenge the oft-repeated statement that once people have been victimized, it can scar their lives permanently. How cruel such predictions seem to us—perhaps to you, too!

"No need to be a victim" explains why even a traumatic event doesn't have to leave permanent marks. And "The ladder out of despair" gives a practical example of how a woman prayed after leaving an abusive marriage.

Also in this issue, staying at peace in the face of alcoholic and addicted friends is the theme of "Can we keep a 'conscious contact with God'?" And two other articles touch on slightly different aspects of victimhood. "Prayer conquers the threat of communal riots" tells how a family maintained its safety during a time of violence. "Why suicide is not the answer" offers a mother's response to her son's suicide. "A glimpse of God's omnipresence brings healing" offers a change of pace as the author explains how her prayer healed a friend of congestion and a cold.
