The early morning hours have always been a favorite time of day for me. The stillness and peace give me a time of uninterrupted reflection. But most of all, these precious hours speak to me of the tender, loving care that Christian Science, the law of God, provides for children.

One predawn morning our baby woke crying very hard. I hurried and took him from his crib and held him—to comfort him. But this didn't silence the screams. The child couldn't talk yet to tell me what was troubling him, but I saw a large swelling behind his ear. I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. We both knew that my fears needed to be eliminated, and this was a good place to start our prayer together.

I remembered how Christ Jesus had put everyone out of the room when he healed the ruler of the synagogue's daughter, (see Luke 8:49–55). I could see in my situation the need to be forceful in stilling the merely human maternal concern and turning right to what the divine Parent, God, was telling me about His own precious child. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy writes: "If we look to the body for pleasure, we find pain; for Life, we find death; for Truth, we find error; for Spirit, we find its opposite, matter. Now reverse this action. Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality. Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts" (pp. 260–261).
