What Matters to You

Books that make a difference

I Like books a lot. In fact, that's how I first found out about ballet. I found a book in the library that showed the basic foot and arm positions, and I practiced them in front of the mirror in my bedroom. I was thrilled sometime later when my mother said my sister Julie and I could take ballet lessons from a woman in town.

She didn't have a real dance studio. Classes were held in the front room of her house, which had been converted for this purpose. But Julie and I loved it! We loved it so much that we went there three days a week after school. Sometimes we'd even stay for more than one class—until my foot started bothering me. An abnormal growth had developed that was making dancing nearly impossible. My mom knew there was something wrong and said something needed to be done. I told her I wanted to pray about it; she said that would be OK.

My family had been attending a Christian Science Church for as long as I could remember. I had had some quick healings when I was younger—healings of flu and an earache. In those instances I knew my mom or a Christian Science practitioner was praying for me, too. Now, I figured it was time for me to find out for myself more about how healing really is possible through prayer.
