Over three years ago my daughter received from an estate Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I had never heard anything about this book, but since at first its appearance reminded me of a Bible, I decided to read it.

At that time I was doing very poorly. I had suffered for more than eighteen years from acute heart disease, a thyroid tumor, and a painful inflammation on my back. I'd spent much of the most recent years in bed. I took many different medications, received hypodermic injections twice a week, and was in contact with a doctor almost every day. I had begun to look for a nursing home for myself, as I didn't want to become a burden to my daughter, who was then not quite an adult.

Science and Health didn't let go of me. To be sure, I often had hardly enough strength to hold it, but I would keep taking it up. Since I kept falling asleep out of weakness, it was often just a couple of sentences that I was able to read. But there was many a day when I felt greatly strengthened because of what I read in the book.
