The guiding star of spiritual healing

The wise men were sure of their goal—they were seeking the Christ. And they were willing to travel some distance to see the long-awaited Messiah. But they needed directions! They went to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him" (Matt. 2:2). They were told that according to prophecy the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. Herod the king sent them there and told them to return and tell him exactly where they found the child.

To avoid losing their way, they kept their eyes on the star, which reappeared to them after they left Herod. They wisely set their course by its light and faithfully followed where it led until they found what they sought—the babe Jesus. The Bible relates, "And, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was" (verse 9). After presenting gifts to the child, they returned home a different way, for they were warned by God not to return to Herod.

Today, the light of divine Science pierces the night of error and resistance to Spirit like a laser beam of hope and healing. Those who yearn to obey the Christly command to heal spiritually know they need wise guidance, and Christian Science reassures them that the guiding light is present, as bright as before. Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, writes, "The star that looked lovingly down on the manager of our Lord, lends its resplendent light to this hour: the light of Truth, to cheer, guide, and bless man as he reaches forth for the infant idea of divine perfection dawning upon human imperfection,—that calms man's fears, bears his burdens, beckons him on to Truth and Love and the sweet immunity these bring from sin, sickness, and death" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 320).
