Following Jesus in the way

When we feel lost in—or trapped by—a difficult situation, the Master's guidance can lead us home, to God.

One morning as I was driving to work, the fog was so thick that I could barely see ten feet ahead of me. Since I was familiar with the road, I was not apprehensive, but I thought of how a stranger, not knowing this particular winding road, might be fearful unless he had someone to follow. Suddenly I saw a parallel between that situation and our need for Christ Jesus as the Way-shower.

Jesus knew the way of Life, Truth, and Love and brought the light of Truth to humanity. He exemplified Christ, the true idea of God and of man's relationship to Him as His spiritually perfect offspring. Christ dispels the frightening mental mist we may feel lost in—the misunderstanding of life as caused by, made of, sustained by, and at the disposal of matter—and shows us the way to peace and well-being.

In his Epistle to the Romans, Paul writes, "If, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life" (5:10). To me, this means that Christ Jesus' life showed us how to live as sons and daughters of God, free from ignorance, sin, fear, disease. It revealed man's unity with his Maker as the image, or idea, of God. But "we shall be saved by his life" only as we follow the Master's guidance; that is, even as Jesus manifested the divine nature in his life, we must do likewise.
