The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by...

The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was introduced to my father's family before I was born. My father's aunt, who had been healed through Christian Science of an ailment doctors had diagnosed as fatal, was so grateful that she gave copies of Science and Health to everyone in the family. Some read the book and began to study Christian Science. Others were grateful for my great-aunt's healing but were not interested in learning more about Science—at least not then. Science and Health eventually became important to me after I was married and became a stepmother to two lovely little girls.

About a year after I was married, my mother experienced a severe rash. This condition disturbed her greatly, and she sought help from a number of doctors. Each one told her not to eat a particular food—and so she stopped eating quite a number of foods. During this time, my mother's weight dropped by two dress sizes.

My father, very upset and wanting to help, bought a book on nerves for her, thinking she might be suffering from a nervous condition. But the book had no effect.
