About thirty years ago I suffered a nervous breakdown

About thirty years ago I suffered a nervous breakdown. The next fifteen years found me in and out of psychiatric wards in hospitals, where I was given drugs, electroshock, and other forms of therapy.

Finally, my son put me in a local nursing home. One day I heard two nurses talking. They said, "Oh, she's had it! She's headed for the mental hospital." At once I sat up straight and said firmly, "Oh, no, not me! If you can't heal me, God can, I know." I found out later that they hadn't been talking about me at all, but my mistake triggered an emphatic reponse. At that moment I decided to study Christian Science seriously. It was the first real decision I had made for many years.

I remembered that my mother had been a student of Christian Science in England. I had childhood memories of her praying for us, with healing effect, when we were ill. At that time I regularly attended a church of another denomination with my father. There I learned to love the Bible stories telling how Christ Jesus healed people, without drugs or medicine, some two thousand years ago. However, during my teen years, I gradually drifted away from church.
