In the early 1980s, after a series of difficult challenges— including a divorce, a court custody battle for my two small children, and seeing a loved friend go through extreme difficulties—I felt as Job did midway in his experience. I started questioning—why, God?

Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Trials are proofs of God's care. Spiritual development germinates not from seed sown in the soil of material hopes, but when these decay, Love propagates anew the higher joys of Spirit, which have no taint of earth. Each successive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine goodness and love." I found comfort and instruction from this passage.

During this time I was finishing my last semester of college—with finals and graduation just one month away. Several times during a three-week period, I felt well enough to attend classes and to walk around campus. I became weaker as the third week ended, however, and late one evening I felt I was passing on. I called the practitioner, and as she firmly spoke spiritual truths to me I revived.
