Two years ago I received a scholarship from an American college to spend a year at that institution. During the final examination period of my winter term, I came down with what appeared to be pneumonia. One morning I woke up feeling very dizzy and hot. I had to write a paper, though, and I felt that I had no time to pray for myself. Over the next few days my physical condition appeared to get worse. Still, I did not take the time to pray for myself. I finished the paper, and that same night I experienced a series of coughing fits that made it impossible to sleep.

I had been brought up in Christian Science, and I knew I wanted to rely on Science in this situation. I decided to call my mother and ask her to pray for me. She quietly assured me that God was with me, and she promised that she would pray for me. I became very afraid that I might die, but then I remembered a few passages from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, that helped me see that the belief in death is unreal.

I called my mother every hour, as she had asked me to do, and the spiritual truths she shared with me "kept me going." The next day a friend came and offered to read the Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly) to me and also gave me a great deal of help. My roommates expressed concern about my condition, but after I assured them I was relying on prayer, they accepted this and took loving care of me.
