Following the footsteps

We don't need to fear how things are going to turn out—as long as we follow the right guide.

One of my favorite beach activities is taking long walks. When I was a little girl walking with my family, I often turned to see our footsteps stretching behind us. I had such fun walking behind the other family members, carefully placing my feet in their footprints. This required some concentration and resulted in plenty of giggles.

This favorite pastime helped me understand more clearly a passage from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, a book that explores the practical meaning of the Bible for our lives. Its author, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, "One's aim, a point beyond faith, should be to find the footsteps of Truth, the way to health and holiness." Science and Health, p. 241. As I remembered how much fun I had had at the beach stepping in the footprints of those I love, I realized that the "footsteps of Truth" are also clearly outlined. They are never in a place of danger or uncertainty. There is no chance that they can slip or slide or wash away. We read in the Bible, "Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip." II Sam. 22:37.

We are enabled to walk in the footsteps of Truth as we remember the teachings and works of our Master, Christ Jesus. Our guidance is established. We can turn to the Gospels to read the healing instruction Jesus gave. As Science and Health tells us, "Jesus mapped out the path for others." Science and Health, p. 38.
