A protective covering

We don't need to wait to be safe. Spirit's protection is always with us, wherever we are.

I Was driving with my teen-age son and his friend when suddenly a motorcyclist next to the car pulled out a gun.

Quietly I asked the two boys to look straight ahead, to remain still, and to pray. Since the man was very, very close to the back of the car, I began to pray diligently, starting with the Lord's Prayer, given to us by Christ Jesus. The first two words, "our Father," assured me instantly that all four of us had one Father and that He was right there protecting each one of us from harm.

The Bible tells us that God is the only creative power and that man made in His likeness expresses God-given dominion. As I prayed, I reasoned that this meant that we in the car could exercise this dominion and not be afraid. But I had learned from my study of Christian Science not to stop there. The man of God's creating would also have dominion over any desire to be violent. So I continued praying with the assurance that because the motorcyclist's real nature was spiritual, he could never commit—or even want to commit—an act of violence. I began to feel the fear recede in my thinking and a calm assurance of the presence and power of God, divine Love, take its place. Almost immediately I remembered a sentence from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy: "Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you." Science and Health, p. 571.
