Servants of God

There's more to spiritual progress than waiting for God to intervene miraculously and solve our problems!

When I first began studying Christian Science, I did not know what was awaiting me, what a radical change it would be. I had witnessed the healing of a disease considered incurable and glimpsed something of the power of divine Love. At first, however, I still believed that disease and other challenges of evil were real, but that God would somehow prevail over them.

I enjoyed the regular study of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. I went to church services and Christian Science lectures. When there was sickness in my family, I would call a practitioner for help. Healing always followed. In going about my daily duties I consciously sought to express the attributes of God: lovingkindness, joy, reliability, beauty, order. In short, I tried to be a good person. My needs were met, and I gratefully counted my blessings.

But I began to wonder, Is Christian Science just a carefree way of life? Is that all there is to it? My gratitude for healings, and the spiritual uplift that accompanies them, began to make me conscious that the whole world was seeking relief from suffering. I longed to share God's all-encompassing love and to respond to the call for help. Did not Christ Jesus, I asked myself, go back to the multitude after praying on the mountaintop and heal them? Did he not send his disciples out to heal in his name? So, then, what about his present-day disciples? What about me? I was moved by the words of a loved hymn that asks:
