I am grateful that my mother had become a student of Christian Science before I was born. Consequently, from the beginning of my life I was healed and protected by understanding God's goodness and love. The ninety-first Psalm offers us this comforting assurance (verses 1, 15): "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. ... He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him."

One day during the summer when I was nine, my sister and her husband and some friends took me with them for a day's picnic outing along a river several miles from town. One of the couples had brought their magnificent and very large dog. The dog and I had a wonderful morning playing together in and out of the shallow stream bed; he was friendly and gentle.

Shortly after lunch and while I was resting in the shade of the cars, I called the dog's name (he was lying a few feet away). Without warning he lunged forward and grabbed me in the jaw area of my face. I was rendered unconscious by the violence of the attack. After the dog was forcefully taken away from me, I regained consciousness as I was being washed with the cold stream water.
