Jacob's prayer

Hello again.
I've wrestled you before.
And always won.

Each time your departure
Leaves me more uneasy—
A defeated winner.

Deceptions, inventions, evasions,
and sheer force of will
Have driven you off.

But this only strengthens the sinews
of darkness and fear—
And raises the stakes for our next encounter.

So here you are again
On this lonely, hope-deserted night,
And once again I'm longing to lose this fight.

But I'll lose it fairly when I do.
You'll have to break me before you bless me,
Proving
without doubt, without mercy or favor,
That Love is the one
Invincible fact.
