No excess, no deficiency in God

In today's hectic, high-pressure world, life can often feel out of control. Where can we turn to bring a sense of balance to our life?

Too much to do and not enough time to do it? Or too much work and not enough pay? It's a common enough situation today. What can we do about it? Can this imbalance be healed? Yes, it can! Let me relate an experience of my own that shows how.

In the stress-filled days of the great Depression, I was employed as a copywriter and broadcaster for a radio station in the American Midwest. Jobs were at a premium, time was money, and I found myself working from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., often seven days a week—turning out tomes of commercial copy. As the accounts were stacked upon my desk by a zealous sales department (who were also victimized by the time-is-money concept), I began to feel like a slave, giving my energy, talents, and time but receiving almost nothing in return.

Compounding the predicament was the fact that my twelve-year-old daughter had to spend a good part of her evenings alone in our apartment until I got home from work. I consoled myself with the notion that my pay, which was minimal, would increase by the end of the summer, in proportion to the amount of work I was turning out and the time it consumed.
