Are there really angels?

Christmastime was near, and everyone in Michelle's second grade was making decorations for the class bulletin board. Michelle was making an angel—an especially beautiful angel. As she cut out a silver foil halo and sprinkled glitter onto the wings, Michelle thought about how wonderful angels were. They looked beautiful and wise and were always perfect. Certainly they were never bothered by pestering baby brothers, boring chores, or having to learn multiplication tables. Best of all, angels could fly and be out of reach of things that hurt.

Of course Michelle knew there are really no such things as angels that look like people with wings. At least she didn't think there were. She had never seen one—and didn't know anyone who had—so Michelle figured most of the time that angels were just pretend, like elves and unicorns.

But what about the angels she learned about in Sunday School? In the Bible, angels came to Abraham, to Jacob, to Daniel in the lions' den. Angels appeared to Mary and Joseph, and there were angels who talked to the shepherds when Jesus was born. Were the angels in those stories just pretend?
