As a teen-ager, I had attended the Sunday Schools of three Protestant denominations. Finally I became a dropout because none of those who taught the Sunday School classes could explain Bible stories in a meaningful way.

Time passed and eventually I became very ill. I was attended by several physicians over a period of nine months. Then a surgeon was consulted, and I was informed that exploratory surgery would be needed. When I was alone I decided—emphatically—that I would never submit to surgery. I called a good friend (from childhood) and told her of my decision. The friend hesitated a moment, then told me she was glad. She added that she felt I would be healed in some way. What a comforting assurance that was.

Four days later I received in the mail two Christian Science pamphlets and an issue of the Sentinel. I began reading—silently and out loud—the wonderful truths of Christian Science! I read all the testimonies of healing. But I was most attracted to the quotations from the Bible. I found myself rejoicing that here was a teaching that explains the truths of the Bible in a most practical manner.
