"Mom," called Karen, sinking down into the cushions of the living room sofa. "My knee hurts an awful lot."

Karen had slipped and banged her knee against the bathtub a while earlier, and the pain still hadn't gone away.

Mom came to the doorway and looked at Karen for a moment, then went over and put her arm around her.
