An evening hope

(with gratitude to the members of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship for giving their love and light)

Father, this is what I want and desire
above all else ... humility.

I silently crave humility—
the tender hue of its countenance,
its simple morning light
quiet on early footsteps.
I await humility's timeless presence
—for it to come to me on my tired flight and
fling of pride.

The old shadow that tightened its fingers,
sealing me in selfish earthly hopes, is loosening.
And spiritual dawn promises its day,

and I, steadfast as a tower in the night,
wait for heavy winds to break, as my
bright, tangent light pierces the clouds—

for a longer, higher glimpse
of day.
