When I was a boy, I was run over by an automobile

When I was a boy, I was run over by an automobile. The tire marks on the trousers of my sailor suit gave evidence that the wheel had gone over one leg. An aunt, who was a keen student of Christian Science, learned what had happened and immediately prayed for me. The result was that when I arrived home there was no evidence of injury.

Prior to this, that much-loved aunt had been given only three years to live by medical specialists in London. But someone gave her a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy before she left for Canada, and she was soon healed. Eventually she became a Christian Science practitioner and continued in the practice until she was ninety-four.

I commenced attending a Christian Science Sunday School at an early age. Among the many truths I learned was that God is the source of our supply. Numerous Bible accounts were shared that clearly brought out this fact. In 1933 I became a member of The Mother Church and a local branch Church of Christ, Scientist. At that time, during the lowest ebb of the great Depression, the members of our branch church decided to reduce the number of Christian Science lectures we normally gave. To me this seemed a retrograde step. I approached the executive board of our church and offered to donate whatever funds were required to enable the church to proceed with its next lecture. (It was to be given in a large theater.) I was in the financial business, which was anything but prosperous, and I had only $50 to my name. But there was no doubt in my mind that because this was God's work I could confidently rely on Him for my income. The board accepted my offer.
