When I was first studying Christian Science, our six-month-old son became seriously ill. Initially he had only a cold. But then suddenly he was breathing so hard you could hear him in the next room.

When my husband came in from work that day, we decided to get a doctor. We both really knew very little about Christian Science—only that when I read the Bible, or Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and prayed, we were always helped. And I would call a Christian Science practitioner whenever an ailment wasn't healed through my own prayers.

The doctor was delayed in coming to see the baby. After he examined our son, he said the child had a type of pneumonia and told us that he had lost a patient that morning with the same disease. I heard him say to my husband, "The baby will be gone by morning." Then he told us where we could reach him "when the time came." He also prescribed some medicine but said, "Nothing really can help him now." When I heard this I said, "Oh, yes! God can help him, 'for with God nothing shall be impossible' [Luke 1:37]. I won't need those material aids to keep me busy—I will be busy praying." The doctor said, "That is the only thing which will save him." Then he left.
