The healing of a severe nervous breakdown brought me back into Christian Science after I had dabbled unsuccessfully with semimetaphysical systems of healing. Since then I have had many healings.

Prior to returning to the study of Science, I was suffering almost constantly from migraine headaches. I had gone to a doctor for help and been given some pills to relieve the pain. But he had warned me not to take too many, as the pills were habit-forming. I'd disregarded this warning because I seemed unable to cope without them; consequently I became addicted to their use.

When I turned to a Christian Science practitioner for help in healing the nervous breakdown, I do not believe I even mentioned the headaches. However, while I was reading and studying Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and working with the practitioner, the headaches just stopped; I forgot all about them. Then one day all the old symptoms returned. Since I could not seem to find relief from my own prayer, I called the practitioner for help. She agreed to pray for me, but I did not experience any immediate relief. As I lay on the bed, I found myself thinking, "If I could just take one of those pills, I wouldn't have to suffer this way." Almost instantly a higher thought came to me in the form of this sentence from Science and Health (p. 234): "If we trust matter, we distrust Spirit." At that I went to the bathroom chest, removed the pills, and threw them out. That was the end of the headache. Only once after this did the symptoms briefly return. But through prayer they soon disappeared entirely, and I have never again, in the many years that have passed since then, had migraines.
