Teaching our children spiritual values

We can teach our children practical values and standards that enable them to face the challenges of life. Parents need not feel that the uncertainties and dangers of modern living are stronger than the available resources of God. As the real Father-Mother of us all, God gives the very best help in child rearing. Parents can learn to find the truths applying to their children and themselves, truths that are the very roots of honesty, purity, intelligence, as well as health and vigor.

The textbooks that guide us in this practical parenting are the Bible and its spiritual interpreter, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. And the essential starting point that the Bible offers us is the truth—discernible as an actual fact now—that we all have one Parent, the heavenly Father who creates us, feeds us spiritually, cares for all our needs, directing, protecting, and governing us. This revelation of the fatherhood of God grows clearer throughout the Scriptures until it reaches its culmination in the life and teachings of Jesus. The Bible also implies that all the qualities of motherhood that we treasure come from God. For instance, the prophet represents God as saying, "As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you." Isa. 66:13.

Spiritually successful parents constantly place themselves and their children in the care of the one heavenly Parent. They strive to express in their lives the qualities that come from God and actually are man's as God's reflection. They take as their standard for thought and conduct the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount. Obedience to these teachings enables parents to train their children to know and obey God's laws.
