I woke one morning recently and found the upper part of one of my legs so swollen that I could not walk. Other frightening symptoms soon developed, and an acquaintance who stopped by the house commented that poisonous spiders are not uncommon in our area. The appearance of the leg seemed to confirm that a spider bite was a possibility.

I called a Christian Science practitioner, and she lovingly came to the house to see me. Also she gave me treatment and recommended several references from the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings for me to study.

For several weeks I was immobilized. My vision became weak, but I kept paper and a pen handy, and I made an effort to write down points from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and to ponder the truth they communicated. One citation, which I committed to memory during this time, aided me greatly (p. 495): "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not." Many other passages from Scripture that I had memorized previously were a source of inspiration and comfort. I also listened to recordings of Science and Health and of hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal, which my husband would place in a stack on the record player before he went to work.
