I was brought up in Christian Science and attended the Sunday School. At an early age I had a healing of a severe headache while my mother was reading a hymn by Mrs. Eddy. I remember that after suddenly feeling well I pleaded with her to read me all the hymns. However, it wasn't until my early twenties that I decided to take up the study of this Science seriously. The following incident prompted my decision.

While visiting a close friend in the country for the weekend, I noticed that a building on her property had been broken into. We investigated and discovered that many valuable antiques were missing. My friend was very upset and remarked that it was typical of people to steal in this day and age. From my study of Science I knew the claim that man is a thief or robber was a lie of mortal mind, and I asked her if I could work this problem out in Christian Science. She relented but was extremely doubtful, and looked at me as though I had become a bit daft!

I went upstairs to study, shut the door, and opened Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Then I thought, "Oh dear, I have no clue what to work on." So I prayed humbly to God to tell me what I should include in my specific prayer, and the answer came, just as if someone were in the room: "Forgiveness." One statement from the Lord's Prayer, with its spiritual interpretation by Mrs. Eddy, was tremendously helpful (p. 17):
