In 1964 I was preparing to serve as an interpreter at the Christian Science Pavilion in the World's Fair in New York. Before going, I had decided to take a refresher course in Spanish at a teacher's college in Mexico.

On the Friday evening of my arrival in Mexico, another teacher and I toured the local markets and consumed a large quantity of a particular fruit. The next morning my face was so swollen that I was unable to see, and the physical discomfort was extreme. Fear almost overwhelmed me. I was far from home and had gone to a great deal of trouble and expense, which seemed to have been in vain.

Since to my knowledge there were no students of Christian Science in that city, I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner in my home city. The practitioner's calm assurance that all was well, and that he would stand by me with prayer, calmed my thought. When I was led back to my room, I realized that even though I could not see to read, I did know by heart every word of Hymn No. 148 in the Christian Science Hymnal, and I decided to sing and ponder it until the healing was accomplished.
