Halting the World's Use of Torture

As the spiritual facts of God and His allness dawn upon human consciousness, the night of false material concepts will dissipate. Spiritual enlightenment serves as healing balm to the pains of erring world beliefs. The use of torture is a blatant and arrogant mortal assertion that God, in His infinite goodness, allows man to be held mercilessly in the grasp of evil. Constitutional and statutory protection, outraged private and official protest, and efforts by humanitarian organizations have been unable to halt the use of torture.

Its usefulness as a tool for punishment or the extraction of information would draw strength from mortal concepts of cruelty, fear, and pain. Christian Science uniquely equips us to bring healing to this contemptible practice. It enables us to begin rooting out and destroying the basic elements upon which torture depends for its claim to power. A right understanding of God, His Christ, and man is the strongest hope the world has for nullifying the use of cruel and unusual treatment. Those who find the use of torture to be a repugnant practice may wish to contribute to its demise but may feel their small efforts would have little overall effect. However, scientific prayer, deeply grounded in a love for God and man, can have a specific and mighty impact.

There are those who at this moment would be greatly blessed by our prayerful turning to God and faithful discernment of His allness. To intelligently and gratefully affirm the spiritual facts of being and to firmly and understandingly deny the claims of evil inevitably bring a measure of healing. You can respond now to this specific need for healing—even as you read—by knowing that God is Love.
