I had an experience that brought me back into the study of Christian Science. Late in my high school years I damaged my leg in an after-school activity. I was carried to a car and rushed to a nearby hospital, where a doctor received me and took X rays. The photos revealed a broken bone and cartilage.

I was informed that surgery was imperative and I would have to remain on crutches until the surgery. The leg muscles were so expanded that it presented problems for surgery. The doctor had me sign a form releasing the hospital of any responsibility for the surgery. When I asked why such a form was required, the doctor said if the operation was a success I still might limp, and if it were a failure, I would be lame.

I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School from early childhood, and so my first reaction when I got home was to call a Christian Science practitioner. I told the practitioner I would like to rely on Christian Science. He replied, "OK, then act as if you believe it." This was a startling statement to hear.
