The Word—or Just Words?

Did you ever believe you were so ill, lonely, fearful, or frustrated that no words would be able to comfort you? Or maybe you felt you didn't even know where to go to find a word of comfort. Sometimes a student of the Bible and the works of Mary Baker Eddy may be tempted to think he is just reading words and that words cannot help him. If so, what he really needs is a clearer understanding of the Word of God and its power to help him.

A good place for him to begin or to enlarge his understanding is to turn to the life of Christ Jesus, who made the Word of God so practical that he was able to prove its effectiveness in healing, regenerating, and restoring those who sought his help. Just what is this Word of God that was so meaningful to Jesus? A thorough study of the deep spiritual significance of the Scriptures reveals the answer. A careful search of the writings of Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, opens to us the full import of the Scriptures. The Word of God is the message of salvation, the Christ, Truth, which Jesus lived and embodied, wherein the whole of creation is seen as spiritual—perfect, complete, and eternal.

Jesus knew that the Word of God is the truth of being. Those who look upon the Word as "just words" are still in some measure of doubt as to its truth. A better understanding of God as the divine Principle of all true being rather than as a person, and a better understanding of man as the expression of this Principle rather than a mortal personality, will give one a better and more practical understanding of this divine message, which Jesus so effectively preached and so forcefully illustrated.
