The early years of my married life had been devoted to much...

The early years of my married life had been devoted to much study and work in my profession, frequently for seven days and evenings each week. This seemed necessary for the progress I wanted to enjoy. But it resulted in nervous prostration, a breakdown, physical and mental. I was barely able to sleep or eat, two activities I had always found most enjoyable. The whole body was racked with pain.

Finally I mentioned to the patient Christian Science practitioner who had worked so diligently with me, treating me through prayer, "I don't believe I can stand the pain any longer. Death would be a welcome relief." She startled me by saying with the spiritual wisdom she always expressed: "Well, you may die, if you are convinced you want to. Or you may live, and think and say, 'Dear God, I am not impressed with all the pain mortal mind claims to impose upon me. But I am grateful for Christian Science and what I have learned through this Science of Your allness and Your goodness. And I am going to stand with You, no matter how loud the physical symptoms shout.'" Her statement broke the mesmerism of my belief that I had overworked and had to suffer as a consequence.

Great inspiration and comfort were found in the words of Ezekiel (18:31, 32): "Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye."
