While I was in college, I became fearful and worried about exams, dating relationships, and other things. I found myself nervously overeating, and I began to gain weight.

When I could no longer wear my old clothes, I was so embarrassed that I covered up my figure with loose-fitting garments. I tried several methods of reducing, but nothing seemed to work. Then came the opportunity to diet with a friend. Even though I followed all the directions of the diet, I would lose five pounds and then gain six! My mind was on food all the time, and I even found myself becoming unsociable with my friends.

Just at the point of giving up I turned to God in prayer. My inspiration came from Hebrews (12:1): "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us." I opened a Christian Science periodical and read a statement to the effect that overweight may represent past failures to pray and fast.
